What were you expecting after the migration? Like, how many projects, workbooks, etc.?
I expected the upgrade to initialize the Tableau Server and migrate any existing data.
I have it working now.
This is what I determined. When you install, you have the option to browse the file system to indicate a different path/folder. I over typed D:\Tableau Server\9.1 and this in effect puts the server bin folder in D:\Tableau Server\9.1 \Tableau Server\9.1 well Tableau must have relative addressing to find the existing operational data, so it pointed to a new empty repository(postgres it think). Once I reinstalled to just D: everything worked.
The best confirmation that you did it right is when the pop-up asks you to login and already knows the tableau Admin user id, if you do it wrong it makes you create a new admin id.
Restoring from a backup to the wrong folder path would probably be a bad thing, cause I would still have the only operational data repository somewhere and the new one restored somewhere else taking up twice the space.
The support people wrote back...
Thank you for contacting Tableau Technical Support and for taking the time to speak with me on the phone.
As we discussed, when Tableau Server is uninstalled it merely uninstalls the application and none of the configuration files. Those are still stored in the Tableau Directory. It was mentioned that the file path may be causing the issues in this instance. We are going to try fixing the path and see if that helps everything to import. Please let me know if it does.
The second option is to restore from the backup that was taken of Friday. There are some tabadmin commands which will be the easiest way to do the restore. I have attached the below article with the steps to perform the restore.
Restore from a Backup
Thanks for sharing that fix! This is too easy to do with the Installer. You might consider upvoting this Idea so we can get traction on making this experience better:
I expect the users, groups, projects to be migrated as they were in the 8.3 to 9.0 migration. What would you expect?
