Wow, that is a huge version jump. Glad you're doing it, you and your users will really like 9.
What specific version of 9 are you installing? I hope it's 9.0.3.
Did you update your Microsoft SQL Server drivers? And are using the correct bitness (64- or 32-bit)?

I think I resolved the issue by reconnecting to the data source (and replacing the existing data sources in the workbook). Not sure why a string field was converted to a numeric field.
