Unfortunately Tableau isn't backward compatible. There's a potential way you can try and open it in 8.2, but it's a bit hacky, and depends how many, if any, of the Tableau 9.0 sepecific features the workbook has used.
First (and most important) make a copy, so you don't loose your original workbook.
Next open the copy of the workbook in a text editor such as Notepad+
Do a find an replace on
This will at least let 8.2 have a go at opening it, what it will look like when you open is a bit of a lottery!!
Download Tableau 9 or Tableau Public to open it.
Tableau 8.2 is not forward compatible.

Thanks Simon! I can now open the workbook, though when I try to save it I receive a message indicating that the workbook will be automatically upgraded when I save. But at least I can open it now.
...Thanks Alexander...it's been a long day!! (it's been 30+ degrees centigrade today...in the UK we're not used to it!!)
When I try and open the copy in Notepad, I get a bunch of random symbols/characters as the text output and can't find any of the 'version' searches your described. Am I doing something wrong?
Are you trying to open a .twbx or a.twb? A .twbx is actually just a zip file, containing the .twb and the data (and images/shapes...etc.). If you unpackage it first (just right click on the file and select 'unpackage'), this will extract the .twb, and you'll also get a folder containing the data. Now try opening the .twb in Notpad and it should now be in English! (well XML!!!)
