New Tableau Tool - Extract and Record your Fields' Comments

    Chris Gerrard

Well commented Fields can be a great help in communicating useful and valuable information about the Fields, from their business semantics to their proper technical interpretation.

Tableau doesn't provide a way for Field comments to be available for collective examination, but now Tableau Tools does with the newst tool: FieldAttributesExtractor.rb, described at Tableau Friction

The tool scans the Workbooks in a folder, including subfolders, looking for commented fields. Those it finds are recorded in a CSV file where they're available for analysis with Tableau, and for any other uses you might think up.
