    Tableau 9 Desktop and Hive

    Abhishek Srivastava

Today is my 2nd day with Tableau.

I created a hive database (Hortonworks distribution) and I can query my tables in the hive console.

I installed Tableau 9 desktop and I also installed Hortonworks Hive ODBC Driver.

I created the data source. It is using the user 'hue' to connect to hive. I successfully tested the connectivity.

Now I opened tableau and I created a connection to Hive using my ODBC data source.

i can see all the tables in tableau and if I drag and drop tables and click update now. I can see data.

but if I try to do a join on two tables... I get error

[Hortonworks][HiveODBC] (35) Error from Hive: error code: '0' error message: 'ExecuteStatement finished with operation state: ERROR_STATE'.

      Unexpected Error

I converted my simple join query into a view in Hive. I also queried the view in hive console and it returned data.

Now from tableau if I drag and drop the view and try to click "update now" I get the same unexpected error.

If I remove the join and query tables individually, I can query both tables using Tableau.

The "unexpected error" does not give me much to troubleshoot or think!

It will be very kind if you could help.
