Has anyone encountered server unexpected error: Tried to register widget with ID - already registered?

    James Golden

      Hello folks,

I have a question for a puzzling issue.  We have a user who works from home, outside the firewall, who VPNs in to the business.

She is encountering an error in Tableau server (we're on 8.2.6), when trying to access a workbook.  This error occurs the majority of the time, although she gets in on occasion.  The error does not appear to be related to Tableau config, but specific to her machine, OS Wondows7.

I have had her clear cache for all borwsers; but she still gets this error on IE8, FF, and Chrome.

      The error is:

"Unexpected Error > An unexpected error occurred.  If you continue to receive this error please contact you Tableau Administrator.  Tried to register widget with id==container but that id is already registered."

Does anyone know what is causing this?  Possible solutions?

      Thanks,

      Jamie

Hi James - Even we used to face issues while using 8.1.7 tableau server with IE 8. When we contact tableau support, obvious recommendation was to upgrade IE to IE9 which was not possible due to organization standard. We never faced issues with chrome but unfortunately chrome was not support by IT within our organization. Once we upgraded to 8.3, this issue was gone.

One of the solution given to us by tableau support is below. See if this works for you.

          Compatibility Mode settings for Tableau

Background:  In Internet Explorer (IE), many users' browsers are set to 'Compatibility Mode'.  This mode allows the current version of IE to work with sites that would normally break when viewed with later versions of IE.  Tableau sometimes struggles with Compatibility Mode and may cause error messages.

As such, Tableau recommends turning off Compatibility mode off using the following steps (total time to complete these steps is 1-2 minutes)

Close all open instances of Internet Explorer

          • Open a new instance of Internet Explorer
          • Click Tools then click Delete browsing history

          image013.jpg

          • In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, tap or click the History check box, and then tap or click Delete

          image014.jpg

          • Tap or click Tools, and then tap or click Compatibility View settings

          image015.jpg

          • Clear the Display intranet sites in Compatibility View check box, clear the Include updated website lists from Microsoft check box, and then tap or click Close

          image016.jpg

          • Restart the system

Also, if a proxy exists, then the timeout settings may need to be increased, as some dashboards may take longer than the default setting to render.

Thank you - we are seeing this issue for this particular user across all

browsers, however I'll try the possible fix you note in response.

            Thanks again.

Thanks again, Manoj.  Just to follow-up; we had our user bring their laptop in to get looked at by the Help Desk team.  I forwarded your suggestions in your answer, and they implemented the mods, including applying patches for the OS.

However, the error was still appearing.  The Help Desk eventually tried a different VPN connection, and it eliminated the error.  Very odd, but seemingly some sort of compatability issue where our VPN connection must slightly differ from our main headquarters, and our colocation 30 miles away.  We haven't looked into these differences yet, but it could be java versions, or something else altogether.  Generally, we try to run most Production business through our colocation, where our Prod stacks live; however, in this case, the VPN config in our main HQ worked to eliminate the problem.

I'll add more info when we have a chance to dig further in.
