1. Re: How to change the shape of some points in the scatter plot upon parameter selection?

I created a calculated field called "State is Residency" containing the formula:
if [State of Residency] = [State Abbreviation] then "Residency State"
else "Other State"
end
And dropped that on the Shape shelf. This seems to satisfy your request.
However, as you can see, when the marks are densely packed, the different shapes are indistinguishable. Just a suggestion here: perhaps something that would stand out, like color. I realize that means you would lose your current color measure. I created Sheet 7 as a possible variation, in which the state residency drives color, and the "Average of Grand and Scholarship..." drives size, rather than color.
I hope that helps, and gives you some ideas.

2. Re: How to change the shape of some points in the scatter plot upon parameter selection?
Yoanna Dosouto Feb 27, 2015 9:13 PM (in response to Bill Lyons)Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for the fast response. That was exactly what I was looking for. I am new to Tableau and still learning how much is actually possible with the tool I am still deciding on the encodings for the graphs, and I will definitely consider size and color instead of shape and color. Thanks again!!!!!!
