Is there a possibility that you can use the Hierarchy option so that at least for that could be a work around?

Maximum number of columns that can be displayed in Tableau is 16 by design since what I feel is that doing analysis on such large number of columns is really difficult. And, if you still want to show 40 columns in a Tableau just built 3 sheets and merge them in a single dashboard.
This will only help you to create report with 40 columns
I tried this and showed it to boss.. he said it looks ugly..
meaning-when i scroll one report the other doesn't ..
I'm able to add multiple columns(without name)..they are included in the tooltip.
have you tried hacking the underlying XML? I vaguely recall a post where somebody successfully did this by way of saving the workbook as a twb, then editting the XML via notepad to state > 16 columns. It's not recommended / supported, but nonetheless it may work.
