When you create the original extract, you're prompted to select the folder to save the extract in.
Are you saying Tableau is forgetting this?
Can you provide some screenshots of the process?
Tableau prompts me to save the extract and I do, but the database location in the Extract properties does not list the database as being located where I saved it. Here is a screenshot of the extract properties. In 8.1, the database location would be identical to where the extract was saved.
Here are screenshots of what I am seeing. Both the files and extract were saved onto my desktop so this isn't a network issue.
I see a similar path when I'm working on a new workbook. Once I've actually saved the workbook, it updates the filename with the correct path (also my desktop). Even still, I was able to create a new report with an extract, then append data from file all before I saved and I didn't have an issue.
I wonder if it's a permission thing for the temporary files? You might find it quickest and easiest to reach out to Tableau Support on this one.
i have the same issue:
after i upgraded to v 8.2 I cannot append data to my extract.
i have successfully done this monthly for 3 years
the append data function overwrites the entire data file
it will not recognize an xlsx file format
what am i not doing or doing incorrectly?
I encountered this same issue. I want to add data from an Excel worksheet. I'm using 8.2.1 on MAC OS X.
Where the extract is saved should not matter. If it doesn't and someone knows why, please explain.
There is this information in the documentation but it doesn't address the problem of how to change the default behavior:
Any solutions to this one?
Unfortunately Tableau shows a not very helpful error message in this case. The real problem is usually that the sheet name in the new file has to the same as the sheet name in the old file. If you want a different sheet name, use Add from Data Source instead.
You need to create a data source that connects to your new file, then use Append from Data Source.
