# Treemaps with two layers

For treemaps with two layers--in my case 'States' are the larger blocks and 'School Districts' are the smaller blocks within those--is there a way to have the larger blocks be different colors, and the smaller blocks be different shades of those colors (based on some other criterion)? I see how to make states different colors (Sheet 1 attached), and districts different shades of one larger color (Sheet 2 attached), but I can't see how to combine the two.

Any chance you can post a packaged workbook demonstrating what you've set up so far?  You can attempt to randomize the data, or use one of the sample datasets to create a similar scenario and post that here along with the goal.  I'm not very experienced with treemaps, but I'd be happy to take a look if a workbook is posted.  Cheers!

Sure!  Please see the attached.  I appreciate your taking a look at this.

Great, thanks!  Does this get you what you want?  This was done by making the measure into a dimension, and then SHIFT+drag both pills onto the color shelf.  Hope this helps.

BTW, I work with school data as well, so feel free to reach out anytime: mlutton@goodwilleducationDOTorg

No problem at all, cheers.

Actually, one more puzzler: You may notice that the legend includes separate color-shade combinations for each state/percentage.  Ideally I would have just one color for each state, as in Sheet 1 above.  Is there any way to remove the percentage from the legend so that there's just one color for each state?

I may not understand--if we remove the percentage, we end up with exactly what you originally had in Sheet 1.

Nevermind, I understand what you mean. I'll see what I can come up with.

Here's what I'd do.  Create a duplicate of the sheet, and remove the % measure from the color shelf on that sheet so you only have a legend for the State colors.  Then, place the original sheet, and this duplicate, inside a horizontal layout container, with the second sheet set to a fixed height of 1 pixel (so its invisible).  Then, show only the legend for that sheet on the dashboard.  See attached--cheers!

Thanks.  That could work.  Sadly, the colors in the legend don't match those in the treemap.

You can edit all the colors, by state, to be whatever you want.
