Custom images will be matched according to the order of filenames (alphabetic) and the order of the fields in the dimension you are using the Shape shelf (you can cusotmize this order if desired). If you use the same names of files as the fields and leave the default order, it should match.
I'm really excited about some of the developments in Tableau R&D: Don't Use Your Words: Research on Icon Generation Gets Noticed | Tableau Software
I'm also excited about the icon research! Hopefully it means that we also will get more "default" shapes in Desktop, and of course only quality shapes based on Tableau's high R&D standards

Thansk Joshua, this is exciting development and is exactly what I'm trying to accomplish with the custom shape matching. I indeed implemented a workaround using custom Map background and loading the image URL (organization logo) dynamically according to condition based on the name of the dimension member (organization name) - it requires editing the twb file but it saves some disk space as I've thousands to match. Icon generation will be an awesome feature.
You're welcome! Editing the XML is a clever solution!
I'm late to this post's discussion thread, but it appeared like you have solved the same challenge that I'm trying to crack in custom shape auto match. Attached is the packaged workbook.
My goal is to match the custom shape (each image file in Tableau Repository respectively named to match the 'item_id' data dimension). I already tried to order the picture by the item_id. However, when loaded into the customer shape, it doesn't re-order as such.
Dave's method sounds more robust. Would it be possible elaborate on how this can be done?
