The Hive installation may not actually be running by default, it's likely that you will need to manually start it. See this thread for discussion of a similar problem: http://community.cloudera.com/t5/Cloudera-Manager-Installation/Cannot-connect-to-Hive-on-CDH4-5-EC2-installation-using-Cloudera/m-p/4587
I hope this helps,
Your suggestion helped and I was able to get the connection established. However, I now face another challenge/error and I guess this is not much to do with Tableau but I ask anyways. When I query the table "wordcount" that I created or get extract, it gave me this error:
[Cloudera][Hardy] (35) Error from Hive: error code: '1' error message: 'Error while processing statement: FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.MapRedTask'.
Unable to create extract
I am not sure how to start troubleshooting. I know it failed the task but why?
You should look in the Hive server logs to see why the query failed. Unfortunately that information doesn't make its way to the ODBC driver to be reported to Tableau and logged in the Tableau log files.
I got it fixed. Look like there was a permission error.
Thanks for the help
I'm running into the same error; what was the nature of the permissions error that you fixed? Thanks.
I used a different username. Originally I used "root" and that one even doesn't have permission level needed. So you either created a different user or find existing one and assign to Hive (I have not tried this).
