Why do I get null as a result even though source has data?

I have excel data and most of the columns in Excel transpose to Tableau with no problem.  However, some of the columns do not.  The columns that do not are columns that contain numeric and alphanumeric data.  For example:

      123

      456

      789

      A23

      B45

      C67

The first three data points from the above sample column show up accurately in Tableau, the last three are displayed as Null even though they are clearly not null.  I have changed the data type from number to string with no luck.  I have experimented with the data by removing the leading letter and refreshing my extract.  This fixes the Null problem and displays 23, 45, and 67 but these are no longer accurate as I need the leading letter.

What can I do to get Tableau to display both numeric and alphanumeric data?
