Question: How to create a new measure (derived from other measures)

Hi, I can't seem to figure out a way to do this (FYI..I'm relatively new to tableau)....

I have 3 measures, A, B & C, i'd like to create two new measures, D as B-A and E as  A+C.

I'm trying to do this in a text table. Any suggestion is welcome! Thank you in advance!

Go to Analysis>Create Calculated Field, then enter D in name and formula as B-A. Same for E as well. Then drag D/E to rows to see the result. Cheers !

Welcome Elias.

I'm glad that you feel welcome to post your question in the forums even as a newer user. Doing a calculation like this in Tableau is relatively simple though it does depend on whether you want the calculation at a row level or an aggregate level.

Refer to my video here for some ideas about how you can create these types of calculations : Introduction to Calculations | Tableau Software

Feel free to respond again to this thread if you still have follow up questions after watching the video. I am happy to help as my schedule allows.

You can use a calculated field such as shown screenshot below and attached workbook.

Thank you all for the quick responses...

I tried the suggestion....i was able to create the measure but it doesn't return any values...see below:

interesting, try SUM([YTD_ACT])+SUM([YTD_FOR])

That did it...it's works now.

Having said that, it should have worked the other way as well, if you attach your workbook I should be able to figure out why it didn't work
