That doesn't sound right. Hard to say withouting knowing the details of your environment. I'd recommend contacting Support and letting us know what the solution is.
Thanks Toby. We realise something is amiss and do already have a ticket open.
While we were waiting for some response, I just thought it was worth seeing if someone could explain what this particular task does since its running daily under no specific instruction from us. Just thought it should be something you'd expect to find in the application help/documentation, but we're typically finding info on the server stuff to be lacking.
I've found most success by asking questions on this community instead.
Donna, I hear ya! Server/admin documentation really needs some beefing up Details, detail, details. For example, I noticed that the 8.1 documentation says nothing about the "Enable TLS" check box except to keep it cleared. Seriously?
There are several tasks that run in the background that we don't have much information on or control over. I don't know what any of these tasks are really for (we could make educated guess), aside from "Refresh Extracts" and "Subscription Notifications"
I'd imagine this has something to do with cleaning up old files that are no longer needed--I also assume its not included in the documentation because it isn't something most users need to worry about.
Still, I agree it would be nice to see a description in cases like this. If you haven't noticed any problems with your dashboards or performance, it may not be much of an issue to worry about.
Definitely post back with what Support tells you! Thanks!
Matt, here's what I found about Reap Extracts a while back. Just one of those tidbits that I squirled away in my documentation just in case since this "inside" information is difficult to get:
I hope Donna's qustion will get us some real info about Purges. Donna, what version of Server are you running?
We're running 8.03 - have no plans to upgrade yet and our infrastructure team certainly don't want to be doing that until we get a more stable and understandable set up.
FYI - an email to Tableau support in relation to our outstanding ticket, gave this response
"The purge files task is a clean up operation that removes orphaned extracts and other unnecessary data from the Tableau Server repository (if you need anything more specific I can find out from our Engineering team). If any background task (including the purge task) fails a dump (.DMP) file is typically generated in the logs sub folders of Tableau Server. These dump files can be substantially large. Historically this issue
has affected a number of customer setups and was later fixed in version 8.0.4
of Tableau Server I believe (see http://kb.tableausoftware.com/articles/issue/server-logs-directory-too-large)."
So we have a little bit more info on the Purge Files task, but haven't requested any more details, though investigation into our performance related issues was showing an accruing mass of .dmp files. We're trying to set up our test environment to replicate live, but due to the above, upgraded test to v8.06. Having other issues with that now (lots of .tmp files being generated, though the .dmp files have stopped being generated). *sigh*
Any other info I get re Purge Files task I'll upload if I remember.
Thanks for following up, Donna.
Do you do monthly backups/cleanup? Sounds like routinely running the tabadmin "cleanup" option helps with the housekeeping duties. I have a batch file that runs on the first of the month that does this (backup/cleanup commands).
We didn't have these things set up to run routinely as weren't aware (the consultant who aided our server install didn't mention it)... anyway we've now been told to run these as part of the troubleshooting exercises we're undertaking in both our live & test environments but sometimes they're taking +8hrs to complete...
Its looking like we're going to need to do a complete fresh rebuild of our environment and as part of that we'll be ensuring all the relevant recommended maintenance tasks are set up and running without issue before we start republishing data sources/workbooks etc.
Thanks for you help & suggestions.
