# Creating Median Values With Agg Metric

Hello,

I'm trying to understand how I can create median values when i'm already showing an aggregate metric. As seen below, I am simply showing an average (Nodes Per Capita) metric by month and Year. I simply want to show the Median values by Month and Year for that metric based on the distribution of values. I tried to add a reference line, but it only gives me the option to create the median values off of the average metric have in the row column. I've attached a sample dataset below. Thank you in advance.

I should probably mention the goal is to plot another line representing each median value by month on the secondary Y axis along side the average Nodes metric.

Hi Kito,

See the attached workbook.

I implemented the solution with two different approaches, both giving the same results.

In Sheet 1 using dual axis and in Sheet 2 using simple axis, showing two Measure Values in Rows and filtering Measures Names: AVG(Noes) and MEDIAN(Nodes)

Check the solution in the attached workbook please.

I hope this helps.

Best

Ramon

Hey Ramon,

That looks about right, but I'm not quite sure how you got the Median option to show when changing the measure aggregation. That option is not available for me when I drag the Nodes metric to rows and click Measure. How did you get that to show so that it can be selected?

Hi Kito,

Duplicate the measure AVG(Nodes) in Rows shelf by Click on it hold Ctrl key drag and drop on the right side on Rows shelf.

Change the measure function from AVG to MEDIAN as in the screenshot.

Done

Check the screenshot

Hope this helps

This is weird. I'm pretty sure I'm on the latest version, but I followed your instructions and Median is not available for me to select.

Hi Kito,

If you're connected to Excel or some other Jet data source, you'll need to create an extract first.

Hey Tracy,

Are you referring to making the data available for others to review or creating the median metric itself? I've already created an extract, or so i thought, and attached it in my original post.

Hi Kito,

I'm referring to getting the median metric itself. Maybe you're not connected to an extract? Right click on your data source and check that the Use Extract option is checked.

I see. I'm connected live to a source table in our sql server DW. The only way I can use the Median measure is to create an extract?

• ###### 11. Re: Creating Median Values With Agg Metric

Hi Kito,

As Tracy said, create an extract of our data source and MEDIAN metric will be available.

Best,

Ramon

sounds good. Thank you guys.

Kito,

Try it and let us know the result.
