Please post an example packaged workbook (.twbx file) in order to get the best help possible. This makes it much easier to help you, as we can actually see the scenario you are describing as we read your question. Also, so much of Tableau is dependent on how you have your view/worksheet set up, so we need to see that setup in order to properly assist you.
create a calc called index: value: index()
convert the index calc to discrete.
place between your lowest date value and your dimension.(as shown above)
On the drop down for the index pill select "Edit Table Calc"
Select compute using advanced.
move the dimensions over to Addressing in similar order:
And set the Sort to Field: the measure that you want to sort on and ascending or Descending.
Click ok and then select to start over every "Lowest level" of your date field. (Mine was Quarter)
At the level of "Deepest"
Uncheck Show Header for the index calc you placed on the shelf.
