How to view more than 20 columns in a single work book of tableau desktop?

    Balaji Sozharajan

      Hi

Am having a excel data which contains more than 20 fields or columns of data with more than 50 rows.

Now i need to know how to get the full view of this data (need to view all the columns) in same single page of the workbook in tableau desktop.

Right now am able to see only 16 columns and that too in clumsy manner not in proper organized manner.

Also is that possible to add a horizontal scroll bar to see the all the columns/fields across the report?

Suggest if any other idea to achieve this.

There seems to be a limit columns to 16 so that way you could be right.

Scrolls should appear automatically when the data cannot fit the display (if you have not choose to show everything on the screen), however, you can use action filters and filters to limit the display to make the visual sensible.  If you need further help, its a good practice to attach a sample workbook along with your posting, this will help forum members readily access your workbook and come up with a possible solution.

However, I created a sample 50 rows with 20 columns and see this limitation is not on my workbook, you can glance below - no hitch to achieve this.

            Hi,

If you do not want scroll bar, there is an option to show the entire view but as you have so many columns, this option is useful for you.

              Hi Balaji,

This is a well discussed limitation in Tableau, the maximum level of rows and column for discrete dimensions/measures are still 16.

In my opinion that is fair enough for a dynamic analytic tool because the intention of the tool itself is to make meaningful insights from scattered/unstructured data.

However I can suggest you a workaround.

Now i need to know how to get the full view of this data (need to view all the columns) in same single page of the workbook in tableau desktop.

You have to split your report to  two and place them in a dashboard side by side to make it as a single view, provided that each rows in both report ordered identically. Adding a rowid field in the source excel sheet will do this for you.

Right now am able to see only 16 columns and that too in clumsy manner not in proper organized manner.

The report looks clumsy because Tableau automatically group/aggregate your rows/columns based on the underlying data.

Example:  when you place the below data to Tableau rows, it will automatically do a group by country. This will repeat for each row level and due to this behavior your report looks clumsy from the original format.

              Excel

              CountryCategory
              AustraliaAppliances
              AustraliaBinders and Binder Accessories
              AustraliaBookcases
              AustraliaChairs & Chairmats

              Tableau

              screen2.png

So, how to make the same Excel source format intact?

Add a new column Rowid (Unique for each rows- simple row number will work perfectly) in the source excel sheet like below.

              RowIdCountryCategory
              1AustraliaAppliances
              2AustraliaBinders and Binder Accessories
              3AustraliaBookcases
              4AustraliaChairs & Chairmats

Now place the rowid field as the first pill in the Tableau rows shelf . (you can hide the rowid field  by right click on the pill and uncheck show header option)

              screen.png

Once you split the report in two sheets then place them in a dashboard side by side as shown below.

Replace the report 2 title with a space then dashboard will look like a single report.

              Screen5.JPG.jpg

Also is that possible to add a horizontal scroll bar to see the all the columns/fields across the report?

Once you place both sheets side by side then go to file-> page setup and set the dashboard width and height in exact pixels so you can see the horizontal scroll bar.

              Screen3.JPG.jpg

              Screen4.JPG.jpg

Another work around is reshape your data.

Example : If your excel data structure is like below then

              Screen6.JPG.jpg

Transpose (or unpivot) to the below format.

              Screen7.JPG.jpg

Now in Tableau place the Country in Rows , Category in column and Sales in the text.

              Screen 8.JPG.jpg

please let me know if you have any questions.

Some other workarounds are listed here

Also, you can use Measure Name/Values to show more than 16 columns of these values. There is also a scaffolding solution, but this really suffers from performance issues against large datasets. Post some mocked up data, and we can put something like to together for you.

                  Hi,

Am able to create the combined Dashboard with 20columns now.Thanks.

Also i need to have separate dashboard which shows a summary of count statewise from which if am selecting any one state then it should open entire list of customer data of that selected state  which includes almost 20columns again.

Can you help me on this ? because with combined chart i can simply show a view of whole customer data for all the columns and not able to add a condition or filter which can enable my user who going to see this report to filter state wise data..

Am not able to attach the excel file here..pls suggest how to attach the sample file here in this discussion.

Summary of the Dashboard will be below; if my user click on any state then it should show entire customer data of that state which having more then 20 columns ..

                    Hi Balaji,

16 Columns restrictions are not applicable when you use a customer dimension which has more than 16 members in it.

You can attach the excel workbook after changing your editor mode to advanced by right click on the top right corner of the editor and choose 'Use advanced editor''. Once you are in advanced editor mode, right bottom you can see the attach button.

                        Bit confused..

Do you need the count of customers from the selected state or how many customers got 20 columns of data from that state?

                          Hi Indumon,

I need show the summary as mentioned in summary sheet of excel and if any user want to see the full details of any particular state for (ex : california) then by clicking that state should display the raw data sheet which contains all the details for that particular state ..(all the columns for california state)..hope you understand my requirement..

actually this report will give list of customers and sales persons details based on each state of US with filter option..tats the objective..

Ok. You can achieve this by adding a new sheet  (Summary sheet)  to your

existing dashboard and a dashboard action which will filter the state in

the detail sheets ( 20 column split).

I will create a sample on your data but you have to wait some time. (2.5

                            hrs:) )

                            thanks

                                  Hi Indumon,

i am having the same problem ,

I Want to create a text table report, that report having 20 fields, as per my knowledge max fields allowed in tableau is 16 fields.so for that reasons I have created two work sheets, one created with 16 fields and other one created with 4 fields. and I put those two in one dashboard. but my problem is that text tables contains more than 1000 records , so every time user have to scroll down the both sheets, at that time will get some rows miss match(becasue of scroll down in both sheets ),so for that reason to avoid the scroll down ,i have to create a pages

                                  for ex:

                                  each page contains 100 records,

                                  page1,page2,page3 ..like this?

                                  How to achive this?

                                  Regards,

                                  Koteswar.
