# bold certain rows including the corresponding values in 'measure name' column?

I'm going to have 7 rows: for example

Cost A: \$100

Cost B: \$200

Cost C: \$150

Total Cost Part 1: \$450

Cost D: \$4100

Cost E: \$100

Total Cost Part 2: \$4200

I would like to have Total Cost Part 1 and Total Cost Part 2 in bold just to depict that it is the sum of the costs of A, B and C and the sum of the costs of D and E respectively.

Is there a way to do this in Tableau?

Thanks,

Sylvia

I'm not sure you'll find an easy one or two click solution--however, you should check out similar threads like this one, and take a long look at Jonathan's fantastically useful conditional formatting workbook/guide: iS there a way to highlight or bold certain rows ( the entire row) in tableau the way you can in excel?

Hi Sylvia,

Are Part1 and Part2 in their own dimension? If not, you could create a calculated field similar to the following:

if [Cost Field]='A' or [Cost Field]='B' or [Cost Field]='C' then 'Part 1' else 'Part 2' end

Then, you can place this on the rows shelf to the left of the Cost Field. Click on Analysis > Totals > Add Subtotals. Right click on the subtotal and select Format... A Format Font dialog box will appear to the left, under Total, change the Pane to bold.

Hope this helps!

Hi Tracy,

'A' is the measure value name. Is it possible to equate something to a measure value name? I've uploaded a sample worksheet. Can you explain with it by trying to change 'Total Budget' field to bold?

Thanks,

Sylvia

Sylvia,

Can you reattach as a .twbx file? If you haven't done this before, just go to Save As and change the file type. When you send the .twb file it doesn't include the data and therefore nothing will render. You could also just attach your data as a separate file.

Thanks!

Hi Kyle,

Attached it as a twbx file. Thanks for letting me know:)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sylvia

Here is one approach, using the individual measures on the text shelf, and formatting within the text editor for those marks.

See Sheet 2, is that essentially what you are after?

It is very much like Tracy said above, you'll need to create groups for your Cost Types. Put that grouping to the left of the Cost Type on the Rows column and then simply hide the header and format the totals to be bold.

Kyle, the cost fields like coffee, espresso , tea etc are header labels in my excel sheet and I don't think we can group up headers? I don't really have control over the format of the data source(excel in my case), but definitely sounds like a solution if I did have control. Or am I missing something here since I was not really able to group those up when I tried.

Matthew, your idea seems to work fabulously! I'm going to do it that way(for now).

Thanks,

Sylvia
