    Coming Soon in 8.1

    Shawn Wallwork

Watched the live streaming keynote. Here's my list of new things I think I'll use/appreciate/like the most:

      1. Copy/Past Dashboards into new workbook (not bookmark, actual copy/paste!)
      2. Format control of fonts in filter lists
      3. Some transparent objects in dashboards: legends and images (logos) were mentioned
      4. New data connection interface with a results window below
      5. DateParse function (I think)
      6. Improved Presentation mode

      What were your favorites?

EDIT: Oh yeah and folders in the data window.

It is hard to choose, because I like almost all of them, but I think my top 7 are:

          1. Percentiles
          2. Box Plots
          3. Ranking
          4. Calendar picker    sets us free from typing dates in the US format (internationalization issue)
          5. 'Apply' button in quick filter
          6. Storypoints: Guided Tour Tabs
          7. Fully 64-bit server & desktop ... if it means better performance

Some of those are 8.2 I think.

One of the biggest for me is the timely demise of JET. Also, the folder creation for dims and measures.

            Dateparse is nice

Customization of grand totals in heat maps is also one of the good news.

I agree with Alex -- no more JET!

Also, the new connection interface for 8.2 looks really slick.

I was hoping you'd be here Shawn---wanted to say hi and shake your hand for your Tableau community support. I learn a ton from both your questions and your answers.

Jim, that's a very nice thing for you to say; much appreciated. I also wish I was there to shake your hand for all the well written, well thought out posts you've been making lately (the details you include are incredible!) Maybe next year (when rumor has it Seattle is the host city, which is closer to home for me) we can meet up, hope so.

Jim enjoy your TCC13! And please keep us forum folks in mind by posting stuff you find interesting/cool at the conference. Thanks,

Thanks for asking; it would be nice to meet you in person in Washington DC, where I assume you are now.

I am not in Washington, but was safely asleep in Faroe Islands when you asked the question.

It is easier to know what our favorite new features are, when we have a complete overview of them.

This list is now officially available and repeated below.

8.2 features are colored red, because we will wait a few months longer for them.

Thanks for posting the list Johan. I reached out to Ellie and asked her if she could segment the list by what's coming in 8.1 (soon) versus 8.2 (not so soon) and I'll share what she posts.

Shawn, my favorite thing for 8.1, and this probably sounds a little silly, is the 'apply' button on Quick filters. We recently rolled out a Tableau report that uses a live connection to a biggish data source and has 40+ items in a quick filter. I've heard complaints more than once about how difficult it is to make it through the selections on that filter. The 'apply' button will remedy that.

Box plots #2. It's great to see Tableau getting back on track with implementing great graph types. They didn't so well in 8.0 with the word cloud, tree map (like the graph type, but not the implementation), and packed bubbles.

Transparency is #3, and hearing that transparency to Quick Filters and Parameters is on the roadmap (how about to Viz's on the dashboard?) for 8.2 is good.

                            Copy/paste dashboard #4--big time saver.

It's be great to see better sorting capabilities in cross tabs or a more intuitive/helpful UI for Advanced Table Calcs, but I don't see any of those ideas at the top of the idea list.

All in all, these improvements in 8.1 and 8.2 are substantial and there's lots more work to do!

From a strategical business development perspective i see that 64bit and R integration as the most well taken decision.

Wish you were here!  I've had the privilege of meeting some of the people behind the names I see on the forums.  It's really good to have faces and voices to go along with the typed words I often see.  (Well some have pictures or have been on conference calls -- but it's not quite the same as in-person.)

                                    Regards,
