    Cannot Connect to Oracle Database

    Lindsey Meador

I'm trying to connect Tableau to a new Oracle database and every time I try the connection I get the following error:

Oracle database error 12514: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

This same connection information works error-free in SQL Developer, so I assume the problem is with the file Tableau uses to get the database TNS information.

I thought Tableau was using the TNSNames.ORA file located at C:\oracle\network\admin on my computer, but after triple checking that the TNS information for the new database is there and correct, I don't think it is. I've tried adding a TNS_ADMIN system variable as dictated in this link: http://mkt.tableausoftware.com/files/tips/pdf/OracleConnection.pdf  but I still could not connect Tableau to my database.

      Any suggestions?
