Click and drag the [Date] dimension to the Text shelf (place it right on top of the box that says "ABC 123 Text" in the photo below, and not in Rows or Columns. See example layout:
NOTE: If your date is not in the format you want once you place it on the Text shelf, you can right click on it and choose from a variety of date formats--year, month, week, and exact date are some examples.
If you'll be using Tableau a lot, you won't want to rely on "Show Me" and double clicking on dimensions/measures all the time, or you'll rarely get what you want.
