Is the image available from a URL? What would you type into the address bar of a web browser to see the image?
Whatever your answer to the second question is what you would use as the URL for a Web Page object (instead of Image object) on the dashboard.
Hope that helps! If not, you may need to give a little more detail. Thanks!
By the way, what is the reason for not wanting to include the image as an external file?

By URL I didn't mean it was available from a website. I just meant that when you exclude files from your workbook when you upload to the server, you need to use the URL and not the name that it is mapped under.
For example instead of "G:" I have to type "//pfas01/share/" in order for my server to be able to find the G drive and get to my data source.
I'm not sure how to do this with the images that you insert straight to the dashboard.
Second, I don't want to include external files because I am working with a direct connection and if I include external files, I can't get live data.
I wish there was an option to include only images.

So, you might try using the Web Page object instead of Image. Then the URL would be something like //pfas01/share/image.png. You'll lose some of the options that come with the Image object (like fitting, centering); but at least you won't have to include the image file.
Are you using Access or Excel on a share for your data source? If so, I can see why including external files causes issues. But if you are connected to SQL Server or some other database, then you can maintain a live connection even when including external files.
You might want to create an idea for including images only (http://community.tableau.com/community/ideas). That would be a great enhancement to future versions. If you do create the idea, please post the link to it in this thread and I'll be sure to vote it up!
Hi I know this is sometime later but there seems to be no resolution to this and I am currently have the same issue.
As it is quite important for my companies reporting style I have added this to the ideas board.
