You're right, there isn't a function I can think of that does this easily...
You could strip the periods away one at a time in a nested FIND function until you get NULLs
OR maybe something easier would be to use a LEN formula along with a REPLACE formula to turn the periods into something longer...
LEN(REPLACE([release],".","AAAAAA")) > 20
should return TRUE for your hot fixes so long at the major and maintenance releases don't get into triple digits
If I understand you correctly: the hotfix release is associated with more periods, in this case 4. you could replace that with blank and use Len to calculate the periods count:
IF LEN([RELEASE])-LEN(REPLACE([RELEASE],".","") = 4, THEN "HOT RELEASE" ELSE ...
Oh yeah nice solution! Although I think a hot release has just 3 periods so the calc field would be
... = 3 THEN "HOT RELEASE" else ...
or > 2 would make sure any sub-hot releases are captured, if there is such a thing...
