Thanks. Moved to Forums.
Also edited my csv file to take out the patient confidential information so I could attach it. However, when I imported this file into tableau, it worked fine (without having touched the GP Code field). So it's only the original (which I can't attach) which seems to have the error. This is a direct export from the hospital patient database which is updated daily and I was hoping to have a live data connection to this file in my tableau workbook.
Using schema.ini is a way to get Tableau to respect your GP codes as text:
- Create a text file named schema.ini in the same folder as the csv
- Define the "GP Code" column as text in schema.ini

Col1="GP Code" Text width 5
You might need to set other settings as well. You can learn more about schema.ini here:

Thanks for this. I was playing around using my 2-week trial when trying to do this and have not come up against the problem since. The GP code starts with a character and Tableau does recognise the field as text so I really don't know what the issue was and not being able to replicate it makes it all the more difficult to fathom out. I put it down to my inexperience at the time.
However, thanks for bringing my attention to these threads as I have a number of other fields in the datasets which do have leading zeros and at some point I may need to draw on this knowledge. For the time being I have just ignored leading zeros and excluded them.
Thanks for helping on the forum. The reason I answered this question is because I like to help helpers and therefore looked if you had any unanswered questions.
