If either of you can post a packaged workbook (.twbx file with data extracted) with a view set up like this, we are happy to help!

Sean Taylor Nov 8, 2013 12:50 PM (in response to Matt Lutton)Hey Matthew,
I'm trying to show the number of homecare visits by age cohort and gender, and would like to be able to provide row subtotals for each gender beside the row grand total. Is this possible? See the attached workbook for an example of the data I'm working with.
Thanks!
Sean

1 of 1 people found this helpfulAnything is possible in Tableau! Its how we get there that takes some expertise. I will take a look, but I'm by no means an expert on this, as I use totals/subtotals VERY little in my everyday work. However, there is a great 3-part series on how to customize them in Tableau here:
Customizing Grand Totals – Part 1 | Drawing with Numbers
Definitely worthwhile to familiarize yourself with some of the methods. The rest of the blog is excellent and very useful--additionally, the author (Jonathan Drummey) is a great guy who is happy to help others! He is also brilliant in his understanding and use of Tableau, if you ask me...
I will take a brief look (leaving shortly)

Here's my contribution. I used the two sheets on a dashboard method described in his blog post at the link provided. You could color the squares however you like. I do not believe I can eliminate the white space between the sheets, but I could be wrong.
I dig Ville's solution, though. Cheers, and best of luck.

Thanks!

10. Re: Crosstab Row Grand Total Retains Month breakout
Sean Taylor Nov 8, 2013 2:42 PM (in response to Ville Tyrväinen)Actually, after a second look, the totals at the bottom of the table don't quite achieve what I was hoping for. I was hoping to have 3 'grand total' columns - one for males, one for females, and one for both males and females combined - similar to what Ken had originally attempted to create:
East West TOTAL PRODUCT Jan Feb Mar Jan Feb Mar Jan Feb Mar AAA 1 2 3 4 5 6 5 7 9 BBB 2 4 6 8 10 12 10 14 18 TOTAL 3 6 9 12 15 18 15 21 27 Is this possible in one worksheet, or would you have to combine multiple worksheets in one dashboard?

Anything is possible. I'd suggest giving Jonathan's blog posts a read, replicating the worksheets he shows you how to create, then apply what you learn to your own vizzes. It's all there and help is available when you need it.
I can take a look, but I would encourage you to experiment on your own.
Also, your original question states: I'm trying to show the number of homecare visits by age cohort and gender, and would like to be able to provide row subtotals for each gender beside the row grand total.
Knowing and clearly stating your goal from the start will enable you to get the most from the forums.
All of this is meant to help, not discourage or insult. No offense intended, we've all been there!

You are in luck. What you want is easily accomplished by simply turning on all subtotals in the Analysis menu (on both sheets).
Doing this in one sheet is certainly possible.

Sean Taylor Nov 8, 2013 4:01 PM (in response to Matt Lutton)Thanks for your quick responses, Matthew.
I ended up having to use 2 worksheets to accomplish what I wanted, similar to what you had first suggested. I added the second worksheet to the right of the first in which I included the row totals for males, females and both..
Take care,
Sean

Sean:
I revised my original solution to include both subtotals and the grand totals. And like I said, using two sheets is NOT necessary--as described in Jonathan's blog posts.
See my previous comment for that solution.
Cheers
