For the functionality you are looking for, I'd be doing this in the polygon mark type rather than filled map type. Google for Tiger State Shapefiles, and go grab a copy of Richard Leeke's "shapetotab". Setting up a filter action in your dashboard should do the trick. You'll need to either join your data or blend.
Also - if you have Tableau version 8, you could float a bar chart over the Atlantic which would supplement your visual up really nicely.
Thanks for your response Allan. How exactly a polygon mark type is going to be different from doing a regular map? I was doing some tests today, but I ended exactly at the same place as yesterday.
Thank you very much for your help.
When you select a state on any map, the other states are greyed out and the state selected is highlighted. How do you intend to see the colors of the other states that aren't highlighted? The only thing that might work is if you had 2 maps side by side and one side was the selection map and the other map was the one that changed colors.
Here is my attempt at a map to map filter, I had to change the data a bit by adding a field so that you could use an action filter without actually removing the states from view.
Is this sort of what you had in mind?
