What version of Tableau Server? Do you use a Context Filter in the workbook in question? There was a bug which caused this error (intermittently) last year, but it has (I think) been fixed in Version 8. Are you running the latest/greatest version of Tableau Server? Also, is this error message actually appearing in the browser, or did you pull it from the log? (The bug I'm thinking about I don't think actually displayed the error message - one would just get a "spinner" that went forever when you tried to render the report).
In your shoes, here's what I'd probably try:
- Download the workbook in question from Tableau Server
- Check to see if it uses a Context Filter and after you're sure it (still) works in Desktop, delete it from Server.
- If you use an extract, remove it, and recreate it, then re-publish
- If error persists, open up a support case...
....you can also email me direct (using my first initial and last name together) with the case number and I'll update it with the bug you might be running into so we can give the folks in tech support a head start.
The Tableau Server build number is 8000.13.0319.1225. The workbooks giving me this error do use context filters and uses a live connection to an MSSQL database. I get the error while trying to view the workbook in a browser. On Tableau Server v7, the same workbook would usually result in a server timeout error while generating the view.
I downloaded the workbook from the server and verified that it worked correctly in Desktop. After removing the context filter and re-publishing the workbook, I am now able to view the data in a browser and pull images from the server (using TabCmd) without any more errors.
Sounds to me as if that problem is still there in 8. I'd suggest you open a case.
forgive me for asking a dumb question... what is a context filter?
Oddly enough, I'm getting the same error today as well (I have tried about 10 times over the past 2 hours). The workbook had been active for weeks; but a simple change (swapping one field out with another on a table) and republishing the workbook is now throwing the error (using 8.0.7 desktop, 8.0.3 server).
Removing the lone context filter in the workbook now produces a slightly different, yet equally cryptic and not very helpful, error message: An unexpected error occurred on the server...TableauException: INTERNAL ERROR.
I will try republishing from a different machine later in the day to see if both time and publish sources could have been the issue; but the error messages Tableau throws could be much more useful.

On fitsalnom site Tableau This problem was fixed in version 8.1, but we have the same 8.1.4.
The Show Activity action in the User Activity administrative view caused the error "Sorry, the view you were looking for does not exist, or you do not have permission to see that view."
Interacting with some views on Tableau Server would sometimes result in a "Tableau Data Engine Error 4: no such schema (TableauTemp)" error. This error was caused when there was heavy load on the query cache and the cache had to be rebuilt.

Regarding this error message, "DataSourceException: Tableau Data Engine Error: 4: no such schema (TableauTemp)", I have written a blog post that may help you with understanding the context.
I hope you find this helpful.
Thanks for the insightful blog post.
Was able to understand the issue I am facing.
