Use countd([Applications]) - only available in data extract or database connections, not in excel
or Count ([Applications])
or number of records?
It depends a bit on what else is in your data
COUNTD or Distinct is what I need. Unfortunately my data is currently in Excel. I could try bringing it over into Access I suppose but that woul require some reworking.
I have tried the other two methods and those won't work because of the underlying data. It's just frustrating cuz I know Tableau knows how to break it down without shoing all the records but I can't count what it finds.

If you create an extract you can use countd.
Thank you Dana and Alex. I did end up creating an Extract and it works great now with countd. For some reason I thought creating an extract would have been trickier but it was really very simple.
