1. Re: how to display different rates for each member of a dimension in same graph
Joshua Milligan Mar 11, 2013 11:21 AM (in response to Margarita Garcia)Margarita,
From what you've described, I'm guessing that the difficulty you are having is because each rate is calculated as a different measure. I think the issue could be alleviated if a single calculation gave you the rate and then you could simply use the dimension to slice the data. Would you be able to post a packaged workbook (with dummy data if there is anything sensitive) so we can look at the specifics of your case?

One possibility is to use the "Measure Names" / "Measure Values" fields. I've posted your workbook with this approach shown. I started by dragging "Measure Names" to the Color shelf, then filtered out measures I didn't want and manually sorted the remaining.
Looking at your data, you have a lot of columns that represent the same measure, just broken down by different attributes. If you could reshape the data, you might find things even easier. Check out this thread for more detail:

5. Re: how to display different rates for each member of a dimension in same graph
Margarita Garcia Mar 11, 2013 1:32 PM (in response to Joshua Milligan)Joshua,
Yes,
I have been strugling with the issue of formatting the population file. The original file looks more like the one you suggest:
date age_group count
1/1/2000 0-5 140
2/1/2000 0-5 100
.....
I reformatted it because I wanted to do trends I thought I needed all grouped into each month/year, but I wasn't sure if this was right...
I am sending you a new workbook with the population file formatted as shown above.
I want to calculate trends of rates using the counts by age and date as denominator. Assuming I use the population file with the counts of measure "age_group" as denominators, and the number of visits in the sample workbook "Sheet 1" I as numerator. What do I display the rates for each age group by date on the same graph?
Thanks,
Margarita

Margarita Garcia Mar 11, 2013 2:43 PM (in response to Margarita Garcia)Hi Joshua,
I just realized that all I needed was to format the file as you suggested, and now the calculation I need is a simple division. I was complicating things too much.
Thank you,
Margarita
