You can publish to the Tableau Server if you have one. See the user manual for Tableau Desktop, Publishing Data Sources, page 967 (Adobe page number is 984). To then use that connection, look to the opposite end of the document, Connect to Data, page 77 (Adobe page 94).

On the menu select "Data" --> "[Data Connection you want to Save]" --> "Add to Saved Data Sources..."
That will save a .tds (Tableau Data Source) file. It contains all the connection information. You can then use it as a data source in other workbooks. Once saved, it should show up on the Tableau start screen.

It took me a few minutes to find this because it's only available from the data menu on a sheet, not on the Data Source tab as I expected. You can also right click the data source on a sheet and do it that way, per the screenshot here.
