Yes, Tableau 7.0 I have corrected the question.
Yes I installed from http://www.tableausoftware.com/support/drivers which basically just directs me to Vertica. I installed the Vertica drivers for 32 bit windows. I then verified from my computer that I can reach vertica via other tools such as the VSQL tool no problem.
I am unable to connect with Tableau however, is there something I should try?
Maybe is worth to install latest vertica 32 bit odbc driver, see this post.
unable to connect to Vertica database unable to connect to Vertica database
and this post related to vertica lack of connectivity
Error connecting to Vertica from Tableau
Also, did you verify Tableau's logs?
Thanks for the tips. I am in fact running the latest Vertica 32-bit odbc driver. I have also verified connectivity because I can login to the vertica from my host as well as use other tools to connect to it.
I will check the vertica logs, I am going to search where to locate them.

My process was:
Install the 32bit (x86) Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 redistributable components from Microsoft <=========
Install the Vertica 6.0.1 32bit drivers
Then was able to see my Vertica 6 DB workbooks working from Tableau Server.
Tableau desktop log files are located in your "My Documents" folder. For example, C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Tableau Repository.

These log files track activities related to displaying views, such as querying the database and generating images:
Any file that starts with exe_ in the folder below is a Tableau Server file and can be deleted.
This is fixed. I had the wrong version of the driver. The version of Vertica I was running was newer than the latest driver that was available for download, and I saw in the log files where it said there was a version mis match, the newer driver fixed it, thanks everyone.
