When you published the report from Desktop, did you click the "Scheduling and Authentication" button and choose to "Embed Password"? If not, we're probably trying to connect with the identity of there account that the Tableau Server service itself is running into (although in this case I'd expect to see a different connection error message)
"Embedded Credentials" option is selected and yes, I have selected "Embed Password".

OK. This sounds like a garden-variety connection problem then.
- Can you ping the SQL box from the Tableau Server using SQL's hostname and IP address?
- Can you telnet (or use another tool) to make sure that port 1433 (or whatever SQL Server is listening to) is accessible?
I see that you''ve looked at the firewall, but from your description it sounds like you're still not able to get to the SQL engine for some reason.
Thanks. I will try that on Monday (I don't have direct access to the server)
So it was something to do with the SQL driver. My support team set up an ODBC connection on the SQL server that seemed to have resolved this issue. I suspect they did something more but that's all they say they did.
