How to count occurences by date

    James Arsenault

I'm using Tableau to report on trends in a bug database and have questions on how best to generate event counts for different days and graph them. Here is a sample of what the data looks like.

      IssueIDDateOpenDateClosed
      1001/1/20131/4/2013
      1011/3/20131/10/2013
      1021/3/2013
      1031/5/2013
      1041/6/20131/7/2013
      1051/10/2013
      1061/10/20131/10/2013
      1071/10/2013
      1081/15/20131/17/2013
      1091/18/1900

I'm looking to get two graphs from this

Graph 1: Show by date the number of issues opened and closed. The idea is to see if the trend of bug detection vs. bug closure is declining as we approach release.

Graph 2: Show by date the total count of open issues (anything without a closed date). The idea here is to see if the trend of open issues is declining fast enough as we approach release.

I've experimented with this in a number of ways but haven't achieved exactly what I want. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've attached a .xls with the sample data.

Thanks to whoever can point me in the right direction!
