Can filled maps display data aggregated to a user-defined hierarchical Region dimension, where Countries are children?

For example, I created a Region called "Southeast Asia" that includes Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, etc.  I have annual data on number of Visitors to these countries.  I can display sum(Visitors) as a color gradient on a filled map.  However, the aggregation and gradient are by country and there doesn't seem to be a way to aggregate sum(Visitors) to the parent Region without going off and creating custom polygons for each Region. The country dimension is required on level of detail to display the map.

The advanced mapping on-demand course (http://www.tableausoftware.com/learn/tutorials/on-demand/mapping) touches on coloring user-defined regions (at 13:00), but they only color by the dimension, not by an aggregated measure. I must be missing something because this seems like it should be fairly intuitive. Thanks for your help!
