@Shawn - an IF or CASE statement probable wouldn't work here, because multiple marks means multiple rows are being displayed in the view. The way to look across multiple rows is a table calc.
@Olena - It is possible to use a table calculation to generate a tooltip with all the data, if you provide some sample data in packaged workbook then something could be prepared for you.
Sorry, I think I figured it out : Columns - Month(Launch Date), Sum(Number of Items); Rows - Category (sorted by number of items). Then I made a bar chart, added Item to Level of Details. Now I can see Item by hovering over the category bar. I think this will fulfill my needs. Thank you!
Nice! I'd seen your stem & leaf plot post, but hadn't seen that addition. I added a comment on using PREVIOUS_VALUE to generate the text.
I haven't been able to open that worksheet and have a very similar question. I have a list of deaths in each county and am making a map with symbols on each county that are proportional to the sum of the deaths there.
I'd like to include just the years of those deaths in the tooltip: e.g., 2003, 2004, 2007.
Data is formatted in the same way as above:
county #deaths year
Washington 1 2007
Outagamie 2 2004
Can anyone post the process as a comment? I keep having trouble opening many of the workbooks in my 7.0.7 version. I'd be very grateful for the help. I've done some reading but don't totally understand table calculations, especially for maps.
If you can, upgrade to 7.0.11, there has been at least one regression in the 7.0.x versions around table calcs, so being on the latest makes a difference. 7.0.7 should be ok, as I remember, but better safe than sorry. Either way, you should be able to open up Tableau public viz'es, especially Alex's that was built prior than the 7.0 release. If you are having troubles there then I suggest you contact Tableau tech support.
I've attached Alex's workbook with my version of the PREVIOUS_VALUE calc, it was generated in 7.0.0 so you should be able to open it.
The basic process is that besides whatever dimensions and measures are on Columns and Rows, the Year will be on the Level of Detail Shelf to provide enough data to generate the tooltip. Then either the LOOKUP() or PREVIOUS_VALUE()-based methods will be used to create the tooltip, where the table calcs will have a compute using of the Year. The "Table Calc in Table Form" worksheet in the attached shows the results of the calculations.
To learn more about table calcs, I put together a set of links to resources here: http://drawingwithnumbers.artisart.org/want-to-learn-table-calculations/
If you need more help, I suggest you post a packaged workbook with some sample data, or at least some sample data.
