I'm looking into whether this is a bug or not. However, if there is nothing on the Columns shelf (i.e. remove Measure Names from the columns shelf), then the grand total that is being expected will appear in the Crosstab.
Thanks for the prompt reply!
Unless I misunderstood, the above described behavior is however not what I see on my side (please see screenshot, nothing on the columns shelf but still a different grand total sent to Excel - by the way, in my workbook which uses a similar trick, as I have several columns, I'd need to keep that Measure name on the Columns shelf).

Seems like a possible bug. I'm using Microsoft Office 2012 which could be the discrepancy. I would recommend filing this with our Support team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks Tracy. I have sent an email to the support team and will include here the outcome of this so that this issue is documented.
Here it is, looks like it's an unexpected behavior indeed:
Thank you for contacting Tableau User Support.
We have received your support request. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. I can confirm that we are aware of the unexpected behaviour. This is due to the manner in which Table Calculations are designed to look at the underlying data layer in the table. The current workarounds would either involve:
- creating two different tables on different worksheets that would provide the values separately;
- Copying the cells and pasting them into Excel
In the meantime I will highlight the issue to our engineering team who will follow up on the matter.
