Same problem, the solution proposed in several posts and pages, of adding ?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank to the URL, is not working.
Hi Marco ,
You don't need to update all the links present in the sheet or dashboard with '?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank' in the dashboard/sheets.
The only thing you need to do is append the final link of the dashboard with '?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank' .
This post has been pending for 5 years now, I'm also searching for answers for this scenario.
Hopefully Tableau will find a solution for this one. T_T
if your final dashboard URL is :-
Just append it with '&:linktarget=_blank'
So you final URL to be used will be
This will help you in opening URL links present in that sheet on separate tabs . Hope it helps .
Al Asor: Please try this once .
Hi Aditya Agarwal,
Have tried this also, yes it will open the link on another tab, however if I open another link (not the same with the 1st one) it will only open on the previously opened tab (not another tab).
Somehow the solution is the same .
if you need we can connect offline to help you out .

The above solution does work, it's just impractical in a lot of cases. If you go to your dashboard on tableau server, while looking at the dashboard, physically type "&:linktarget=_blank" at the end of the URL of the dashboard in your browser and hit enter, they should now open in separate tabs (and not just overwrite the first new tab)
If you share the dashboard, when you copy the link, physically add "&:linktarget=_blank" to the end of the link that you copied and when you go to that link of your dashboard with that appended to it, it should now open in separate tabs (and not just overwrite the first new tab)
I've tried it all 3 ways on my server and they work fine.
When looking at the dashboard on the server:
When giving a "share" URL:
<div class='tableauPlaceholder' style='width: 1404px; height: 2400px;'> <object class='tableauViz' width='1404' height='2450' style='display: none;'> <param name='host_url' value='https%3A%2F%2Fyour.tableau.server%2F' /> <param name='site_root' value='/t/NetworkOperations' /> <param name='name' value='mopmap/TodaysMOPs' /> <param name='tabs' value='no' /> <param name='toolbar' value='top' /> <param name='showShareOptions' value='true' /> <param name="refresh" value="true" /> <param name="linktarget" value="_blank" /> </object> </div>
Has anyone found the answer to this question yet? I have tried appending the link with &linktarget=_blank and the new link always opens in the same tab to override the previous link once published on the server. (The link opens to a new tab in the desktop version, however this isn't really helpful to me b/c all users are viewing on server.) I played around and tried everything I can think of.
Hello Jeremy ,
Can you share the screenshots of those steps , it will be very helpful.
Even i had same issue but i have resolved it ,
suppose this is your dashboard url on the server http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/OpenaNewTabforEachSheet/EnglishAlphabets,
just add "?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank" at the end
I.e http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/OpenaNewTabforEachSheet/EnglishAlphabets?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank , but the thing is every time you close the server you have to add that code back to the browser url so what i have done is i created a go/link for http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/OpenaNewTabforEachSheet/EnglishAlphabets?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank , and used that go link to open the dashboard link .
you can create a go/link here if you have an official company/school id.
Hope this answers your question.
I'm having the same issue. I think the confusion is if you append the above to the dashboard url it works, but if you have action urls in the dashboard it does not. I added "&linktarget=_blank" to the end of all action executed urls but have the same issue.

adding ?:embed=yes&:linktarget=_blank works perfect. Don't add it to all the URLs just add it at the end of the URL of the master page only.
This is the default behavior that Google Chrome has.
If you try to use URL actions on Firefox, it opens new tabs instead of reloading the original one.
