Hi Brad. I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question exactly, but I use a couple of parameters and a calculated 'Data Date Range' field for my extracts. The idea is from Russell Christopher http://tableaulove.tumblr.com/post/18945358848/how-to-publish-an-unpopulated-tableau-extract.
Here's a link to the solution I use - see message 9 at the bottom. http://community.tableau.com/thread/116501
Hope that helps. Kelly
Hi Kelly - I appreciate the response, but this situation is a little different. I actually wonder if its a bug, because I can consitantly reproduce it.
So, lets say I have a dataset that looks like this in mysql:
table A (contains ids)
table B (contains dates)
and table A and table B are joined via an inner join.
The combined tables contain 50 million rows lets say, so I want to create an extract. I create an extract and filter on id (contain only 50 ids). I also then restrict the extract to the last 7 days. I run the extract and get the results I expect.
Now, lets say that I want to extract the last 10 days. I go to extract the data, and my date filter is gone. This also happens when I publish to tableau server (which is bad). What I've found is that if I create a copy of my date field and then filter on that, it works and stays in the filters as expected.
Its very odd behavior, I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
This does sound like odd behavior. I would recommend sending this in to our support team to take a closer look. To get a faster response time, I would suggest sending along the logs and workbook if possible to email@example.com:
I'm really, really late to this, but I am experiencing the exact same behavior. Did you ever get this resolved or find an explanation?
I had the same issue.
No idea how I fixed it but here's what I did.
Duplicate the problematic data source by right click on it in any view.
Replace the original source with the new. Ctrl+z to undo that operation. Delete the duplicate. All then worked fine - crazy...
I believe this has something to do with data source filters being used in the workbook when they come from an extract that is the primary data source.
I'd love to know the real answer, but I'd rather have it work and move on with my day:)
