1. Re: Categorizing Difference Between 2 Columns
Dimitri.B Aug 22, 2012 6:14 PM (in response to Gordon Young)I can't figure out what the problem is. Can you do a mock-up of the view you want, and the view you get when you try?

Dimitri.B Aug 22, 2012 8:50 PM (in response to Gordon Young)The main problem here is that your data is 'misaligned', i.e. each day has A value on one row and B value on another. If you can re-shape your data so that each day has both A and B values on the same row, then the task becomes very easy. Is it possible?
If not, you will either have to settle for an ugly graph or use table calculations.

4. Re: Categorizing Difference Between 2 Columns
Gordon Young Aug 22, 2012 9:01 PM (in response to Dimitri.B)The data is such because it is union between 2 different data sources (A and B) with the same columns. I'm trying to compare the values between A and B to ensure they match and hilight the incidents that don't.
If I re-shape the data prior to bringing this into Tableau then I understand the visualization is very easy. I want to find a solution that does not require re-shaping the data as some of our users are not proficient with re-shaping and was one of the main reasons Tableau was purchased. This excercise is something the users have to do on a daily basis.
What do you mean by ugly graph? Also, mind pointing me towards what you are thinking for table calculations?
Thanks.

5. Re: Categorizing Difference Between 2 Columns
Tram Trinh Aug 22, 2012 9:31 PM (in response to Gordon Young)Hi Gordon,
I had a go at this (just trying to improve my own skills by checking out forum posts ) and got close to what I think you want
The main key is to add TxnDate (as an Exact Date) into the Level of Details shelf.
This still doesn't give you a correct total value at category level - just the correct grouping by category of the bars. The quickest way I could think of to get the totals as labels was to use reference lines. Also, any category with a total of 0 will still show.
Might not be exactly what you want (especially with formatting of reference line labels being so limited), but it's close without having to re-shape your data and use table calcs.
If you need to make the chart a bit more complex, you might have to go down the re-shaping/table calc route anyway.
Hope this helps,
Tram.

1 of 1 people found this helpfulHi Dimitri, for bar charts, Tableau turns on borders as soon as you drag a discrete pill onto the Level of Detail shelf, to show that the bar chart is stacked, so you can always manually turn them off.

Gordon Young Aug 23, 2012 8:21 AM (in response to Tram Trinh)Hi Tram. Thank you so much. You are amazing! This is exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks Dimitri for your suggestions and ideas.
Also, thank you Jonathan. I have never thought of just turning off borders. I love learning new things from this community!
You guys are amazing!
