# Newbie Average Calculation Help

Hello,

I am new to Tableau, so I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked or seems like a newbie question. I am trying to run a simple calculation in Tableau that doesn't seem to work no matter what I try. My data is confidential, so I can't post a workbook, so I guess I'll try to explain it as clearly as possible. I have six numbers stored in a row, lets call this Row A. I'm trying to take each of these six numbers and subtract it by the average of the row. In excel, this would look like this:

ROW AAverage of ROW AGOAL
13.5-2.5
23.5-1.5
33.5-0.5
43.50.5
53.51.5
63.52.5

How would I get from ROW A to GOAL?

Hi Madison,

First, you'll have to find your Average of ROW A. The calculation for this should look similar to the following:

total(sum([Row A]))/total(countd([whatever dimension is being used]))

Then, to get the Goal, the calculation will look like the following:

sum([Row A])-[Above Calculation]

Hope this answers the question!

Hello Tracy,

I'm getting the correct average. However, it does not take me to the GOAL numbers. In fact, it's only returning one number to me.

Hi Madison,

Is there a dimension on the view? I'm not sure I understand how the data is set up maybe. Would it be possible to mockup a sample workbook (twbx file) to show what the issue is? Thanks!

Hello Tracy,

I've made minor adjustments to your formula and "accidently" stepped onto what I was looking for. Thanks so much for your help!
