I have an update on this poblem.
The * show up when I blend 2 data sources together and it is a one to many relationship. I would have expected Tableau to show 2 rows when in fact it shows 1 row with an * in the specifice field.
I have a student_class_course Data Connection which is joined to staff_classes via class_id includes the following fields.
student_course - If I drop the Class Name and Teacher on the Rows Shelf the Classes that have 2 Teachers show both records.
I then blend this Data Connection with a Grades file and that is when the * start to show up where there are 2 teachers for the particular class.
Ideas greatfully received.
With data blending, if there is more than one record that matches the blended field you are going to get the *. Can you not do another join on the grades file?
Thanks for the reply.
I tried that in the beginning but of Course It doubled the records where there was 2 Class Teachers which skewed the Totals.
One thought would be to have 2 connections:- One with the Grades file attached to the Teachers file which would give me the Details Data and then another connection where I have just the Grades file which will allow me to have the Summary Data. I just thought this was bad practice as I would have 2 sets of Calcualted Field Measures which were the same.
Chris - Any chance you could upload the workbook that you are referring to in your post?
Would you be able to re-post this saving it as a twbx file?
Any luck with this? I'm having the same issue and I can't seem to be able to fix it.
It Seems you cannot use a Blend on a one to many relationship without getting the *.
I joined instea.
