# Problem calculating totals when there's 'duplicate' items in the data

Hi all,

I have data that has different categories assigned to it, and so I have duplicate Sales totals for a given ID, I'm looking to get a total value for sales, one which takes the maximum/average of the sales per Sales ID and then gives me a total for it -- I just want to get one number back, in this case 45000. (and not look at the ID by ID sales)

I'm struggling with this -- any ideas? I have vague thoughts on pass-through functions, but when I try that I get scaler/aggregation issues with the calulcations

Thanks,

Fionnuala

Do you want the maximum or the average? Sales ID 7 has two categories, but they are not duplicate sales values

Hi Alex,

Sorry, that was a mistake, the values for a given Sales ID should be identical, I'll update the attached file. So Max or Average should give the same value.

Two table calculations - one to have the sales value only if this is the first row in the Sales ID (and ignore all others).

The second then sums up all of these values. Kind of tricky to explain, but have a look at the advanced options of the table calculations and we can go from there.

I'm afraid I'm not sure how to get the sales value if this is the first row in the data.

There should have been an attachment. Here we go.

thanks, this is quite useful, I may have some expanded questions on this.
