Is there a way to use the nth maximum value as a filter item?

I have tried one method created by Joe Mako in November of 2010 in response to a similar question. I can't use that example in my situation. What I have is a situation where I am comparing different "data as of" dates so that I can compare the same data as it is this year and was a year ago, etc. I can't use MAX() in an IF statement  - Tableau will not let me use a statement like "IF (year of date) < max(year of date)" - cannot mix aggregates in if statements. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated.
