2 Categories, Top N by months

    Alan Kwan

I have 2 categories, a & b, and each category has 10 products. How do I should the the top 5 products of each category by months?

Category     Product      Jan     Feb     Mar     April

      A                  1

      B                  5

I have tried to use the knowledgebase, http://kb.tableausoftware.com/articles/knowledgebase/finding-top-n-within-category

Doesn't really seem to reproduce what I wanted.

      Please show me the steps.

          Hi Alan,

This can be done by following the instructions in the above KB article. However, the month will have to be added to the set. I have attached a sample workbook using the Superstore sample.

          Hope this helps!

            Hello Tracy,

I have an additional question for another view I'm trying to build. Taking the same example you provided, would it be possible to see top 10 products sold by category this year, how much they sold last year and then compute the YOY difference?

I followed your approach and created a set for category, Year and Product Name, and then put the Year in the columns tab in a bid to see 2011 and 2012 sales numbers side by side for the top 10 products sold in 2012. I'd like to then calculate the YOY based on this text table view. Is this possible?

Thank you very much for your time indeed.
