You could also make a calculated field that concatinates the two fields together like:
and then apply your sort to that field.
If using an Extract, be sure to Optimize your extract when using a formula like that.
It doesn't work. I don't need to separate fields. I just want sort my sets manually. I hope, this isn't bug for Tableau 7.0.
because It could easily make with Tableau 6.1. I wrote that case to support, I will wait their answer.
The set can manually be sorted once it is placed on the view. Hope this helps!
With Tableau desktop 6.1, we can easily use sort our sets and placed in filter shelfs.
But when I try to same thing with Tableau dekstop 7.0, it shows me that their manula sort option is disable.
I don't want to add my "sets" to rows or Colm. I just want to create a set and use it on filter shelfs.
I try to explain my way.
Step1; Create a set
Step2; right-click on set select "Field Properties" then select "Sort"
Step3; choose manual option there.
My customer doesn't want to use sets in Rows or Columns. They just want to use this sorted sets in filter shelfs.
I added two image, one of them is from 6.1 and I can easily make manual sort in sets.
But the other one, I make it with tableau 7.0. and it disable their manula sorting.
I'm trying to understand the use case. If the set is not being used on the view, then why does it need to be sorted?
So it looks like you are trying to use a filter set, but you have not filtered anything.
I agree with Tracy, more information on your use case would be helpful, the screen shots you have shown so far, lead me to think you just want a filter on a normal field and then you can apply the sort to the field to get the sort you want in the quick filter list, that you cannot get in the filter set, and this sort will be retained.
Additionally, I tend to avoid filter sets and instead use calculated fields, they are more flexible, have the ability you are looking for, and are generally faster to evaluate than filter sets.
The real question is really what exactly are you trying to accomplish, there is likely a better route than using filter sets.
I'm having the exact same problem (and this is something new to 7.0).
What I'm trying to accomplish (and I think Emre as well) is to create a graph then add a quick filter on a variable that is not being used in any way in the original graph. I use a quick filter off a set of this variable so that I can remove the null option from the quick filter. For example, my original graph would be sum(profit) over time and I would like to add a quick filter for Shipping Cost. My data has a variable similar to Shipping cost but it comes in pre-definned brackets (<$500, $500-$2,000, $2,000-$5,000, >$5,000) so it's a dimension not a measure. Due to the $ symbols I can't sort by alphabetical order. Also, Tableau is pulling the data source order as alphabetical as well (so that sort option doesn't help). I need the manual sort on the set in order for the quick filter to show up in the correct order and to remove 'null' as a filter option. I know this is a small detail but it looks very sloppy to our clients.
Joe, I would love to see an example of how you use calc fields instead of sets.
Thanks for your help!
This is a bug in tableau 7. It has been filed and should be fixed in an upcoming service release (though i don't think we caught it soon enough to make the next one). Sorry that this is broken. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any workarounds that i can see.
I agree with Ross. I found another bug in Tableau 7.0 . If you try to sort one field from dimension and use in Quick Filter, everthing seems good, but when you try to publish it to server, you will see that your sorted fields change their orders to "DataSourceOrder".
If you extract data and publish it, it will work fine. But, In Tableau 6.1, you don't need to be extract data for sorting.
%70 of my customers are working with msSQL, and they don't like this feature. They said that they would return to Tableau 6.1. They extract all of their data for sorting, and this will takes a space on their local machine.
Anyone knows the solution for that case?
Is there any opportunity sort our data and publish it to server without extract?
FYI, this should be fixed in the 7.0.2 release that came out yesterday. If you continue to have problems let us know.
I check 7.0.2. and It works fine. Thanks for your information.
