I tried opening the sample you attached, but it shows an error that it can't find the "Sample - Superstore Sales (Excel).xls" file
Sorry about that. I've added the Excel file. Thanks.
Sean (nice name BTW )
I edited your workbook (see attached) only making a few slight changes:
- I rt-clicked the data source and check-marked the 'Use Extract' (this makes the COUNTD() function available).
- Then I swapped COUNT() for COUNTD() in your calculated field
- Then I added Grand total for the columns.

.Fenneran, the Super Store spreadsheet is in your My Tableau Repository\Datasources folder. To find where that is go to File\Repository Location. The top line shows the path to your repository. Careful not to change it, I did and it took me awhile to sort it all out.

I created a new calculated field called "Unique Customers" which uses the rawsql_str function.
This gives you a list of all the customers, but only one per.
Then I changed the CountofCustomers calculated field to be: count([UniqueCustomers])
Put the new fields in their place and I think that does what you want.
I would attach the updated twb, but can't find the attach link.
I like your solution better. I thought there was a countd function, but did not see it and assumed I was nuts .
To save Richard or one of the other guys the time...
The reason it appears and disappears is because MS Jet Engine doesn't support COUNTD() (or REPLACE() ) but the Tableau Data Engine does, and when you do an extract you change engines. I suspect there are other functions that are effected, but these are the only two I've seen mentioned. If anybody finds a list let us know.
Thanks for the responses. I'll give this a try and let you know I make out.
