    Rank based coloring

    Jonathan Drummey

When using the color shelf, the options for the color spectrum are limited to a continuous or discrete (stepped) range. When I have data that is strongly clustered around a few points, with some large outliers, it can be hard to see the gradations between them when using either option. Most of the data is in a very small range of colors, and I'd like that part to use a wider range.

The "Saturation" section in this blog post by Brendan Gregg - http://dtrace.org/blogs/brendan/2011/12/18/visualizing-device-utilization/ - describes rank based coloring, as defined by Bryan Cantrill. It seems like this kind of option would meet my needs.
