Okay, I think I stumbled across the answer. I found this page http://www.tableausoftware.com/support/knowledge-base/downloading-tableau-products and under Step 1 there's the link "Tableau Software Customer Account Center" that I followed. After I logged in I clicked on "My Downloads" and from there the most recent version was available.
If I'm wrong or if there's another way then please correct me.
Just to confirm, anyone who downloads from there will automatically get the latest version, paid support or not?
For "How do I know if I'm running the latest-n-greatest version?"
You can visit http://www.tableausoftware.com/support/releases and expand the version that you want to have and at the bottom of each expanded section is text like:
"Version 6.0.4 is displayed as build number 6000.11.0131.2100"
That build number can be found in your Hep->About dialog box.
Here is how I decipher the build number:
- the first 4 numbers represent the major version number "6000" for 6.0.x or "5200" for 5.2.x
- the next 2 numbers represent the year "11" for 2011
- the next 4 numbers represent the month and day "0131" for January 31st
- and the last 4 could be time of day, but I am not sure.
Generally this date embedded in the build number is only a few days prior to the release date.
Ah. Cool, thanks Joe! That is quite helpful :-)
