What if you right-click the word "Null" that appears on your view and select "Edit Alias"? (like in the attached image) That may be the alternative you are looking for.
If that option is not available for you, can you please post and example workbook that demonstrates your situation?

Thanks for all the other posts and info that you put up, they've been immensely helpful.
The attached is some made up data for project milestones, there's one for PROJ123 that's not yet been completed so the Actual date is Null, I'd like to show a blank space there.
I'm displaying the date using the ATTR function so I can format it nicely, it appears making it continuous does the same thing. Either way the edit_alias option isn't available.
If there's no easy way to deal with a Null in the formatting I'll just have to do a calculated field between the Actual and Forecast dates.

I believe the only way to currently do that is to use a calculated field like:
IF ISNULL([Actual Finish]) THEN "" ELSE STR(DATEPART('month',[Actual Finish])) +"/"+STR(DATEPART('day',[Actual Finish])) +"/"+STR(DATEPART('year',[Actual Finish])) END
I consider this another example when a FORMAT() function would be useful to have in Tableau.
Ok, thanks for that. I was down to suspecting as much.
+1 for FORMAT(), most assuredly
Thanks for writing that formula. It's awesome and nice to just grab to use!
Jay, currently it is really important that you learn to 'ping' people. I'm sure Joe Mako would appreciate hearing you found his post from 2 years ago useful -- and all us regular forum folks are really glad you searched and actually found the answer you were looking for (not always easy). Good job!
To ping someone type the @ sign and then start typing their name. With Joe it's easy, he'll pop up right away. But with others (Jonathan) you'll have to type their whole first name and then an underscore _ (for the space) and a D of his last name before Jonathan Drummey comes up as an option. [FYI: This is an incredible improvement over what we use to have to do to ping someone! So you're not hearing any real complaint from me.]
